Question 1d)

What is the classification for ibuprofen 200mg tablets?

My initial reaction was that it would be a Part II drug, but after having looked for it in the Part II list here (starting pg 43) and seeing that it's not there, I found it in the Part I section (p 22), with nothing ticked. Which makes it a part 1 (P1) drug, meaning it is the equivalent of a UK 'P med', to be sold in a pharmacy but no prescription required, and a pharmacist should be in the vicinity. I believe in the UK ibuprofen 200 mg can picked off a shelf in the supermarket, in small packets only though.

  1. Hi! Do you have any suggestions on how to study for legislation?? Currently in the US and looking at all these chemical names that do NOT exist here! Is it pretty much memorizing and cramming as much as my brain will hold? Thanks!!!

  2. My suggestion is to start with the similarities between HK drugs and legislation with those in your own country, rather than focusing on the differences. That makes it easier to remember which bits are different.

  3. I presume the lists and schedules are not provided in the exam?and basically we have to remember all the "popular" drugs from the list and hope for the best in exam??? or is there a more systematic way? Thank You

    1. No they are not provided. But by and large you can guess or narrow down the scheduling of the majority of the drugs, if that helps. For example ibuprofen was never going to be prescription only was it.
